“Wavy” Crochet Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern
Today I’m introducing you to my newest free pattern called “Wavy”. It’s a crochet scarf with lots of color way options. So update your winter accessories, stay hip as you watch those cold Friday night football games with this sweet scarf. Beginner friendly, super easy pattern that’s not boring to do.

More color combos you can try!
When making the Retro Waves Blanket, there were certain color combinations that just looked good together and the burgundy and yellow just reminded me of Harry Potter. Not your typical shades of red or yellow but they looked great together and thus the inspiration for this color combo.
Halloween is next week, not sure if Harry Potter is still a popular costume but I’m pretty sure it is. Make that special someone this scarf to put the finishing touches on their one of a kind costume. No one else will have the same scarf as you, I promise. Yarn colors are Red Heart Burgundy and Caron One Pound Sunflower.
Finally, here is an ocean inspired color combo. It sort of looks like waves crashing on the sand with white caps. Here are the yarn colors if you are interested: Pound of Love White, Caron One Pound Off White, Red Heart Soft Navy, Pound of Love Denim and Red Heart Light Blue.
Crochet Scarf Length & Width
People often ask how long and wide you should make a crochet scarf. Seriously, I think it’s just a matter of personal preference and how you plan on wearing it. This scarf goes to my waist and can be folded in half. You be the judge and see how you like this pattern. You can always go shorter, longer, narrower or wider to suit your taste.

“Wavy” Crochet Scarf Pattern – Instructions
Materials: Before we jump into the pattern, let’s gather our materials. For this project, you’ll need:
- Yarn: This project is a great way to use up scrap yarn from your stash. You can use any yarn you choose, combine different brands of yarn because it doesn’t really matter. Choose your favorite colors in the same weight category. Worsted weight yarn 4 ply is a good choice.
- Crochet Hook: Select your crochet hook size that matches the yarn weight you’ve chosen. Recommended size: 5.50 mm hook / I hook.
- Scissors: For changing colors of yarn only when you run out of a color.
- Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends.
STITCH Knowledge:
- Single crochet – Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
- Double crochet – Yarn over and insert the hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull yarn through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull yarn through the last two loops on the hook.
- Treble crochet – Yarn over twice and insert the hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull yarn through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull yarn through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
How to Crochet a Treble Stitch:
- Yarn Over Twice: Start by yarning over your hook twice. This is what gives the treble its height.
- Insert Hook: Insert your hook into the stitch where you want the treble stitch to go.
- Yarn Over and Pull Through: Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have four loops on your hook.
- Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops: Yarn over again, and pull through the first two loops on your hook. You’ll have three loops left.
- Yarn Over and Pull Through Two More Loops: Yarn over again, and pull through the next two loops. Now, you’ll have two loops remaining.
- Finish the Stitch: Yarn over one last time and pull through the final two loops on your hook.
ABBREVIATIONS (United States Terms):
- CH: chain
- SC: single crochet
- DC: double crochet
- TC: treble crochet
- ST(S): stitch(es)
- CH SP: chain space
Finished Size:
Finished crochet scarf measures 61.5″ x 6.5″.
Waves Crochet Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern
This easy pattern uses basic crochet stitches including single, double and treble stitches. Treble stitches are easy to do, try holding the yarn you are crocheting into if it gets fiddley.
For this stitch you will need multiples of 8 plus 4 for the starting chain.
Crochet Scarf Stitch Pattern
First CH 172. (168 stitches plus 4)
Row 1
Working into the top loop only of each CH ST: DC in the third chain from the hook. DC in the next CH. *TC in the next 2 CHs, DC in the next 2 CHs, SC in the next 2 CHs, DC in the next 2 CHs*.
Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the chain. The last ST of the last repeat should fall in the last foundation CH ST. Change color on the last yarn over of the last DC. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2
DC in the same ST as the turning chain. DC in the next DC. *TC in the next 2 SC’s, DC in the next 2 DC’s, SC in the next 2 TC’s, DC in the next 2 DC’s*.
Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the row. The last ST of the last repeat should fall in the last DC. Change color on the last yarn over of the last DC. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3 to Row 12
Repeat Row 2 until it’s the width you want it. This scarf has 12 rows.
When done, bind off and weave in yarn tails. Or leave your tails long and add fringe. You can also add one of these simple crochet borders and pick a pattern to add to this free crochet scarf pattern.
