The Hoodie Scarf: Easy Half Double Crochet Pattern
If you love practical crochet projects that are cute, warm, and easy to make, you’re going to love this one. This Hoodie Scarf Crochet Pattern combines the best parts of a cozy scarf and a comfy hood, all made with easy single and half double crochet stitches.

It’s a fun project that doesn’t use much yarn and even a beginner can make. Easy one row repeat and doesn’t time a long time to make either. You’ll make the scarf and hood in separate sections and then sew them together at the end for a perfect fit. I made mine using two colors for a striped, vintage inspired look.
You can follow the free pattern below or grab the printable pattern to keep on hand or crochet offline.
Skill Level
Easy — perfect for any skill level. Just repeat row over and over for each section.
Materials
You can use any yarn you like but this beginner-friendly pattern was written using 4 ply worsted weight yarn and a 5.5 mm crochet hook to achieve the hoodie scarf measurements final size as 56.5″ x 6.5″ scarf section and hoodie that is 11″ x 13″ on each side. If you don’t like the striped color pattern, make this in any color combo you desire or one solid color. The choice is yours.
- Yarn: Two skeins of medium weight (4) yarn — one in green, one in white (approximately 600 yards total)
- Hook: Size I (5.5 mm hook)
- Other Supplies: Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape
Stitches Used
- CH – Chain
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet

One of the reasons why I really like half double crochet patterns is because the stitch is tighter without large gaps that the double crochet stitch has. It’s always a good idea to use a tighter stitch for certain projects, this hoodie scarf is one of those projects.
Finished Size
- Scarf: About 56” long and 6.5” wide
- Hood: Each panel measures about 11” x 13” before joining

Hoodie Scarf: Easy Half Double Crochet Pattern
Pattern Overview
This hoodie scarf free crochet pattern is made in three parts:
- The scarf base (striped)
- The two hood panels (striped)
- The final assembly where you join everything together
The stripes are made by alternating colors every two rows for a total of 8 stripes on the scarf and 15 on the hood. You don’t have to follow the striped color patternOnce all three sections are finished, you’ll sew the hood to the scarf using your yarn needle. This is a simple pattern with simple stitches. For more free patterns, check out my Pattern Index.

Part 1: Make the Hood Panels
The hood is made in two panels that you’ll later sew together along the top.
Foundation Chain: First chain a starting chain of 36 single crochet stitches.
Row 1 (Color A – Green):
HDC in 2nd CH from hook and in each chain across. CH 2, turn.
Row 2 (Green):
HDC in 1st CH from hook and across. CH 2, turn.
Switch to white yarn at the end of Row 2.
Row 3–4 (Color B – White):
HDC in each stitch across, chaining 2 at the end of each row and turning your work. Switch back to green at the end of Row 4.
Repeat these 2-row stripes until you have 30 total rows (15 stripes).
Fasten off and weave in tails.
Repeat the same steps to make your second hood panel.

Join the Hood Panels
Lay your two hood panels flat with the right sides together and stripes aligned. Using your yarn needle and green yarn, sew across the top edge going in through the top of one side and through the top of the other side. Then go go back into the other side.
Match your piece together by pinching them with your fingers. You can match up chains from each panel and insert through both loops on each side.

Bella Coco has a YouTube tutorial on how to sew with yarn three ways. Use any method you like, it doesn’t matter.
Once you finish sewing, open up the hood and fold it in half so the seam runs across the top. Set the finished hood aside while you make the scarf.
Part 2: Make the Scarf Base
Now it’s time to crochet the scarf portion that the hood will attach to later.
Foundation Chain: CH 130. Turn your work.
Row 1:
HDC in the second CH from hook and in each chain across. CH 2, turn.
Row 2:
HDC in first CH from hook and in each stitch across. CH 2, turn.
Repeat until you have 16 total rows (8 stripes — 2 rows per color). Alternate colors every two rows for a striped effect.
When you’ve finished your 16 rows, fasten off and weave in all your tails.
Add Solid Scarf Ends
Now you’ll add dark green ends to your scarf to give it a finished, polished look — and you’ll also cover up all those stripe color changes in the process.
Step 1: Work across one short end of the scarf. Attach dark green yarn and work one row of single crochet in the opposite direction of the stripes (so the edge runs perpendicular to them). As you go, crochet right over all the color change tails to hide them neatly inside the stitches.
Step 2: CH 2 and turn your work.
Step 3: Work 12 rows of HDC, starting in the first stitch from the hook on every row. CH 2, turn at the end of each row.
Fasten off and weave in your tails. If you’ve struggled with weaving your tails, here’s a great YouTube tutorial by Nicki’s Homemade Crafts to show you how.
Step 4: Repeat this process on the opposite end of the scarf so both sides have matching dark green panels.
You now have a finished striped scarf with solid ends — it looks clean and modern, and it’s ready for the hood.
Part 3: Join the Hood to the Scarf
Now for the final step — joining your pieces together.

- Fold your scarf in half to find the center point.
- Lay your hood flat with the wrong side facing up.
- Pinch or clip the center of the hood to the center of the scarf.
- Use your yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the hood to the center of the scarf, keeping the seam smooth and even.
Make sure to work on a flat surface — it’s easier to line everything up this way.

Once your hood is fully attached, weave in all remaining tails neatly.
Turn the whole piece inside out to hide the seams, give it a little shake, and admire your work — you’ve just made your own cozy crochet hoodie scarf!

Tips for Success
✅ Work on flat surface like a table when sewing panels together, makes it really easy to do and keeps things straight.
✅ Check your work as you go when joining panels by looking at the right side of work to make sure everything is lined up and looks good.
✅ Customize hood size by measuring from your fore head to the back of your head and that is the length of your starting chain for hood panels.
