Crochet pillow cover pattern free. Here’s a modern crochet pillow pattern using the extended single crochet stitch and a pillow form. Yarn used was Lion Brand Hometown chunky yarn.
Today I’m going to walk you through the steps of how to make a modern crochet pillow cover. I created this easy pattern that only has a total of 50 rows all using the fun and EASY extended single crochet stitch and single crochet stitch to join. You’re gonna love how fast you can whip up this pillow!
A great way to change your home décor is to switch out your pillows. And the best part about a simple crochet pillow pattern is that you can customize the pillow look and feel based on the different colors of yarn you select. There’s nothing I love better than to see my granddaughters room filled with round pillows and a square pillow that I crocheted for her. Did I mention she has quilted pillows that I made for her too? See below for materials needed.

Modern Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern Free – Materials Needed
The color scheme for this modern pillow cover is cream, pink and gold. I wanted to use up leftover yarn scraps from several crochet projects that I thought would look good together and give a modern vibe. The materials are very common and you should be able to go to your local craft store or shop online to purchase.
Beginner crocheters can make this easily. It’s easy because you just keep making extended single crochet rows. ESC stitches make the single crochet stitch chunkier and adds some texture to the pillow. You can finish this pillow cover in a day.
Yarn Amounts Needed
The yarn amounts for each color was about 1 1/2 skeins, remember I was using scrap yarn leftover from another project. Since there are three colors, you will need 6 skeins of super bulky 6 ply yarn, M crochet hook, yarn needle and pillow insert. I’ve listed the products that I used below but you can use any super bulky 6 ply yarn you want. The package will tell you what the ply is on the label, look for the number 6.:
- 2 skeins Lion Brand Hometown (Providence Pink)
- 2 skeins Lion Brand Hometown (Madison Mustard)
- 2 skeins Lion Brand Hometown (Houston Cream)
- Size M crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- 16″ Square Pillow Form

Pillow Form
Weather you call the inside of a crochet cushion a pillow form or pillow insert, it really doesn’t matter. It’s all the same thing. It’s the stuffing for your pillow. Here are three options for your pillow form.
1. Buy a pillow form at the craft store. Craft stores sell pillow inserts in different shapes and sizes.
2. Make a pillow form with fabric and pillow stuffing. If you have a sewing machine and pillow stuffing you can make your own. Cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of your pillow. Sew three sides with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn the fabric inside out. Stuff pillow with pillow stuffing from fabric store or from old pillows. Use sewing pins to to hold last side of pillow down and keep stuffing in. Take to the sewing machine and sew the last side of the pillow.
3. Recycle a pillow and repurpose it like I did. I was gifted a new bedding set from family that had decorative pillows to go on the bed top. Below is one of those decorative pillows I’m recycling for this crochet project. But you could also go thrifting at your local thrift store or look around your house for pillows you can cover.

Modern Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern – Instructions
To make this crochet pillow cover, you will be making two separate pieces and then connecting them together with the pillow insert stuffed in the middle. Again, this pattern uses only two stitches. For the two pillow pieces, the only stitch you will use for every stitch in every row is the extended single crochet, the abbreviation for this stitch is (esc). That’s why it’s the perfect pattern to make your own pillows. You don’t need mad crochet skills to complete. Let me tell you how to do the extended single crochet stitch.

Extended Single Crochet
Extended single crochet instructions. To extend a single crochet, you start like a normal single crochet, but pull through only one loop on the hook, creating a chain stitch, then yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

Modern Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern (Free and Easy)
We will make two crochet pillow covers, a front panel and a back panel, then connect the tow panels together with a pillow form in the middle. This free crochet pattern uses basic crochet stitches and a simple pattern made up of striped rows. This pillow will make a great addition to your bed or on the sofa in your living room. Pattern is in US terminology, not UK.
Pattern Abbreviations (US):
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
esc = extended single crochet

Gauge:
You want the first two rows the same width as your pillow form, that’s your gauge. Some yarn weight and fiber has more stretch than other yarn weights and fibers. It’s best to do the first two rows of your pillow and do a fit check. Crocheting four rows and doing checking your gauge is even better.
Pro tip: Do not check your gauge until you do at least two rows. Super bulky yarn has a good amount of stretch. The gauge will be false and end up a lot wider than you need if you don’t follow this advice. I spent a lot of time redoing the starting chain count for this pattern due to this so you don’t have to!
Modern Square Crochet Pillow Cover Pattern
For this pattern you will crochet one front and one back pillow cover for a total of two pieces. Once both pieces are done, you will crochet on the outside of the pillow cover to attach. Let’s get started with front pillow cover first.

Weaving Tails
Tie a knot everywhere you changed yarns and then use the yarn needle to weave in the tails.
Joining Front and Back Covers:
Next, lay the front pillow cover on top of the back pillow cover. Join three sides of the pillow cover using a single crochet stitch on the outside of the pillow covers to join. Make sure you add three single crochets into all the corners to round out the border evenly. See picture below.
This easy crochet pillow pattern joins all sides of the crochet pillow so it’s not a removable cover. Once you have three sides joined, take the pillow insert and stuff it into the pillow cover. Make sure you get the corners of the insert stuffed all the way into the cover corners. Final step is to join the last side of the pillow cover to complete. This super bulky yarn will stretch to fit, so don’t be afraid to pull it into shape if needed. Take the yarn needle to weave tail ends into pillow cover. Fluff out the pillow and enjoy!
