This market bag crochet pattern uses basic crochet stitches, mini bean stitch texture and sturdy straps to create a reusable market bag that works for library runs, shopping, beach trips, crochet projects and everyday errands. The body of the bag is worked flat and folded together, which keeps construction simple while still giving the finished bag structure and shape.

This free crochet tote bag pattern is written in US terms and is best for intermediate crocheters comfortable with front post stitches, bag shaping and boxing corners.

You Should Know – Market Bag Crochet Pattern

As with anything that is crocheted with yarn, it will stretch out with use. Try using tshirt yarn, macrame yarn or another sturdy yarn if you really want a sturdy bag.

The boxed corners help shape the bottom of the bag but anything made with yarn is soft and won’t stand on it’s own without help. Try cutting some cardboard and lay flat on the bottom inside your bag.

Tie off yarn and weave in tails with a yarn needle.

The mini bean stitch creates texture while still keeping the body of the bag thick enough to hold shape. This is the perfect way to make crochet bags feel sturdy without becoming heavy.

How To Close The Crochet Bag Sides

Fold the crochet panel in half with the right side facing inward.

Working through both layers, use single crochet stitches to join the edges together.

Work one SC in each next ch across the side seam.

Tie off and repeat on the second side.

Turn the bag right side out.

This creates the body of the bag.

The seams are sturdy and flexible which makes this reusable market bag stronger than many open mesh styles.

Make The Crochet Bag Handles

Make two straps.

Row 4

SC in front loop only across row

Tie off and weave in tails.

The front loop row helps the straps look the same on both sides of your work.

Before attaching the straps permanently, pin them to the bag with safety pins and do a fit check. Make sure the strap hangs at your desired length.

Some people prefer shorter tote bags while others like a longer shoulder strap. Test before sewing because ripping out strap placement is tricky to do.

Crochet Flower Pattern

The flowers add texture and vintage style to the finished bag.

Round 3

Tie off yarn.

Attach flowers using a yarn needle or tapestry needle.

You can attach flowers:

  • Near the handles
  • Along the bottom of the bag
  • In the center
  • Randomly across the body of the bag

Crochet flowers are forgiving. They cover mistakes and make everything look intentional.

How To Box The Bottom Of The Bag

This step is optional but highly recommended.

Boxed corners create a solid bottom which helps the bag sit upright and carry more weight comfortably.

Turn the bag inside out.

Pinch the bottom corners of the market bag and stitch a horizontal line with yarn needle from edge to edge then turn right side out by Sew Nikki

Pinch one corner so the seam lines up in the center.

Using the joining stitches as your guide, sew a horizontal line across the corner.

I sew across the third sc down from the tip for a medium width base.

For different sizes, sew lower across the corner.

Repeat on the other side.

Turn the bag right side out and push the corners outward with your fingers.

The base of the flat bottom bag is the measurement from the point to where you sew your yarn in a horizontal line. Want a wider bottom, sew further down and make sure you pinch your bag.

Attach The Crochet Straps

Place straps about 1.5 inches below the top edge of the bag.

Place handle ends at least 1.5 onto bag and use safety pins to pin in place and check fit before securing with yarn needle by Sew Nikki

Use matching yarn and a yarn needle to sew them securely.

Sew one line near the base of the strap and another near the top edge.

Repeat on both sides.

Please do not attach straps with three tiny stitches and positive thinking. Grocery shopping tests every weak spot immediately.

Attach Crochet Flowers

Use the flower yarn tails to sew flowers onto the bag.

You can be creative with placement depending on your personal style and favorite colors.

Some people prefer one flower in the center while others scatter several flowers across the body of the bag.

There is no wrong answer here.
