If you love scrappy, colorful, vintage inspired crochet projects, you’re going to flip over this one. Today I’m sharing my FREE Retro Granny Stripe Crochet Poncho Pattern. A super fun, super cozy poncho that looks way more complicated than it actually is. This design changes colors every single round, with a soft off white neutral between each bright color, and the vibe is pure 70s retro granny chic.

Think: your grandma’s afghan, but make it fashion.

This poncho has a simple granny-stripe foundation row followed by 33 easy, rhythmic rounds. If you can double crochet, chain, and slip stitch… you’re golden. Whether you’re crocheting on the couch, at your kid’s soccer game, in the carpool line, or binge-watching old movies, this is one of those projects that feel like meditation.

And yes, this is a FREE pattern.

Why You’ll Love This Retro Granny Stripe Poncho

This poncho is:

  • Flowy Designs
  • Simple Construction
  • No Stitch Markers
  • Basic Crochet Stitches
  • Crocheters of all skill levels

And since the color changes every round, the poncho literally builds its own personality as you go. You’ll never get bored.

It also drapes beautifully, light enough for layering, but warm enough to wear on a crisp day. Yesterday I washed this beauty on gentle cycle in warm water with 2 Shout Color Catcher sheets. Then dried on medium heat until done. Now it’s soft and flowy with a beautiful drape. And it’s a bit larger now that it’s been washed which is perfect.

Color Changes: How I Did It

I just love the look of ponchos, the colorful ones that feel retro. Not any color works for this either, all my colors are primary ones with no real light colors. The light colors just didn’t work for me.

I alternated one colorful round, one off white round, all the way down. You can follow my color order, mix it up, or embrace full chaos scrap yarn mode. Below is the full color chart I used, including the off white “reset” color between each pop of color.

Materials

  • Yarn: One skein each of the yarns above, even the off white yarn. All yarns are medium weight (4) in multiple colors
  • Hook: H/5.0 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Measurements

  • Finished length: 24″ (neck to point)
  • Finished width: 33″ (sleeve to sleeve)
  • Add or subtract rounds if you want it longer or shorter
  • Foundation chain: 64 chains (4 ply acrylic yarn has stretch and should fit most adult size heads)

This crochet poncho pattern has holes that are see through in between the granny stripes. This is normal, you will need to wear a top underneath the poncho.

It’s the perfect accessory. You can wear it any time of the year over a tank top or a turtleneck. Easy enough for beginner crocheters, following these clear instructions below. You don’t need much yarn, the neutral yarn is the most yarn and 1 skein of Caron One Pounder will make this poncho no problem. But use what you have, it doesn’t need to look like mine.

Sustainable stitching is when you reuse yarn from other projects or use what you have instead of buying more yarn. It may not be the colors you love but you will love the finished poncho, trust me.

Stitch Abbreviations

US crochet terms:

  • St(s) = stitch(es)
  • Ch = chain
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • Dc = double crochet
  • Dc Cluster = 3 dc in same ch space
  • Dc Cluster Corner/Inc = (dc cluster, ch 3, dc cluster) in same corner space
  • Rnd = round
  • Rep = repeat

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 3 counts as a stitch every single time
  • Always ch 1 before moving to the next cluster
  • You’re working in chain spaces (not the stitches) after the first row
  • Sl st joins your round
  • Color changes every round
  • Turn your work at the start of every new round

Granny Stripe Crochet Poncho Free Pattern

So this poncho was made for my body type with a loose fit. I wear a United States large if your interested.

Please refer to the yarn color chart to know what color to use for each round.

Foundation

Ch 64.
Sl st into the first ch to form a circle. Make sure you straighten the chain before joining into a circle. We will be crocheting in the round for this pattern.

Round 1

Ch 3 (counts as dc).
In that same ch: dc cluster corner/inc.
Ch 1.

* Sk 3 ch, dc cluster in next ch, ch 1. Rep that 2 more times.
Sk 3 ch, dc cluster corner/inc.

Continue this sequence around until you finish the circle:

  • 4 corners
  • 12 regular clusters (3 on each side)

Sl st to join. Fasten off and switch colors.

Round 2

Turn your work.
Join new color in nearest corner.

Ch 3, 2 dc in same corner space, ch 3, dc cluster again in that space. Ch 1.

Work:

  • 1 dc cluster in every ch-1 edge space
  • Corner/inc in every corner space
  • Always ch 1 between everything

Sl st to join, fasten off, switch colors.

Rounds 3–6

Repeat Round 2 with color changes each round.

Round 7 (Shape Change!)

From here, you’re creating the poncho points.

Turn work, join new color in the nearest corner, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, dc cluster, ch 1.

From now on:

  • Only two corners will increase (top + bottom)
  • Side corners become normal clusters

Work around following this rule:

  • Dc cluster in every edge space
  • Dc cluster (NOT a corner) in side corners
  • Corner/inc only in the top and bottom corners

Sl st, fasten off.

Rounds 8–33

Repeat the same rhythm:

  • Join in corner
  • Work corner/inc
  • Dc clusters in all ch-1 spaces
  • Corner/inc in only two corners
  • Color change every round

Sl st to join.

Feel free to add more rounds until you have your desired length or want a dramatic boho drape. This easy poncho is perfect for cooler months when you just need an extra layer. The perfect project, only took me two days total.

Finishing

Weave in all ends then wash and dry. Washing helps soften the shoulders and gives it a beautiful drape. Yarn is stiff until you wash and dry it properly.

Weaving didn’t take long to long either, about 90 minutes while watching tv and doing other things. Not bad!
