Hey there, fellow quilters! Today is all about modern and trendy Ruby Star Society and where you can snag some free quilt patterns to fuel your creativity. Whether you’re new to quilting or a seasoned pro, discovering new patterns and fabrics is always a blast, so let’s jump right in!
What is Ruby Star Society?
So, first things first, what exactly is Ruby Star Society? Well, think of it as a haven for modern fabric enthusiasts. It’s a fabric manufacturer that’s all about vibrant designs, quality materials, and a whole lot of creative inspiration. These 5 designers were the original OG’s at Cotton & Steel before departing in 2018. Melody Miller formed a new company called Ruby Star Society, a new division of Moda Fabrics. The other designers followed her. They have a loyal following of quilt designers who showcase their fabric lines, more on that below.
One reason for their popularity is that while each designer has their own style, each designers fabric plays well with the others. That comes in real handy, this supportive collaboration makes this company and their fabrics unique.
They burst onto the scene with a fresh perspective and quickly won the hearts of quilters worldwide. If you are a modern quilter, you will want to pay attention then go check out their beautiful fabrics for yourself. RSS is always a great backing fabric option for any quilt you need to complete.

Grab a copy of my Quilt Planning Journal, filled with graph paper and some note pages to help you design at least 4 quilts or sewing projects! I have been using mine for a little while and already I am jotting down ideas as I see them and reminders about websites where I have seen some ‘must have’ fabric, so I think this can be so much more than just a design book. Pin in fabric swatches, photos of your finished quilts and enjoy your creative process! Click the bar below.
Meet the Main Designers
One of the reasons why Ruby Star Society stands out is because of the talented designers behind their fabric lines. These folks are the creative geniuses who bring their visions to life, turning fabric into works of art. Here are some of the main designers you’ll want to keep an eye on:
Melody Miller: Known for her retro-inspired designs and bold color choices, Melody’s creations are like a blast from the past with a modern twist. Miller founded RSS and has many free patterns showcasing her awesome fabric lines. Popular fabric lines include Rise, Juicy, Flowerland, Curio, Elixir,
Alexia Marcelle Abegg: With a keen eye for detail and a love for hand-drawn motifs, Alexia’s collections are whimsical and charming, adding a playful touch to any project. Warp & Weft is a collection of yarn-dyed woven cotton fabrics. The fabrics are soft and drapey, and can be used to make garments and quilts. The fabric is 100% cotton, with some metallic threads in some weaves. The Warp & Weft collection is designed to mix and match with Alexia Abegg’s previous group Alma and her Add It Up.
Kimberly Kight: Drawing inspiration from vintage fabrics and prints, Kimberly’s designs have a timeless appeal that adds a touch of nostalgia to your quilting projects. Popular fabric lines include Ruby Star Society Basics, Smol, Lucky Strikes, Tomato Tomahto, Anagram, Petunia and Lil just to name a few.
Sarah Watts: Sarah Watts is a creative powerhouse known for her whimsical illustrations and charming designs. Her fabric collections often feature adorable characters, playful motifs, and a touch of magic. Popular fabric lines include Purl, Backyard, Firefly, Sugar, Teddy and the Bears, Crescent, Florida, Twirl and Tiger Fly.
Rashida Coleman Hale: Her work is inspired by summers in Japan as a child and the Zakka-style of sewing. Rashida is from Northern California, the San Francisco Bay Area, that’s where I’m from! Her style is bright, quirky and with a mismatch of color. Popular fabric lines include Whatnot, Reign, Pivot, Adorn, Sunbeam, Koi Pond and Linear.
