Halloween Quilted Table Runner Pattern

Halloween Quilted Table Runner Pattern

The quilt block’s easy design is made by using half square triangles and three different colors of fabric to make an eight point star. It looks like a LeMoyne Star block but isn’t. Fabric options include charm pack or layer cake pre-cut fabric, fat quarter or scrap fabrics. To match my Halloween décor, I’m using black, purple and just a little orange to tie it all together. Seasonal table toppers are a great way to decorate for the holidays without a lot of fuss!

Seasonal Fabrics

Halloween block ideas always look better with fabric in seasonal patterns or autumn colors. My favorite fabrics are Halloween inspired prints, Moda Fabrics, Shabby Fabrics and Riley Blake Designs have lots of fun choices. They also have Halloween fabric that glows in the dark if you want to hang it on the outside of your homes front door! Most local fabric stores also sell these brands, I’ve even seen these in the discount racks at my local fabric store.

I really like small Halloween quilt patterns. Cute decorations for the holiday but super easy to store away. A festive table runner, table topper or wall hanging works well for most of us and is quick to make. Finished size measures 19.75″ x 19.75″ but can be adjusted for a longer table runner. Please note this pattern looks best if your prints are contrasting colors. I was playing around with stash fabric so my two prints don’t have much contrast but I still like it

Cutting Instructions

Below are detailed instructions for the block and border. You may want to check out my full tutorial on how to make half square triangles if you have never made them before.

Block Instructions

Make 4 half square triangles (HST) with two 4.5″ squares in background and light print. Place fabric right sides together, draw a diagonal line on wrong side of background, then sew on both sides of the line using quarter inch seam allowances. Cut in half on the diagonal line.

Repeat the process with two 4.5″ squares in background and dark print. Repeat one last time with two 4.5″ squares in light and dark print. Press with iron when done. Trim all HST to 4″ x 4″.

Arrange the units using my sample as your guide. Then sew units together to form rows. Then sew rows together to complete the block. Seam allowances are a quarter inch for entire project.

Border Instructions

First border is made with 1.5″ strips attached to top and bottom of the star block, then to the sides. Second border is made with 1.25″ strips, third border strips are 1.5″.

Finishing Touches

With your quilt top complete, it’s time to assemble the quilt sandwich and start quilting! Layer your quilt top, batting, and backing, then baste the layers together using quilt basting spray or pins. Consider using a Halloween-themed patterned fabric or use fabric from your scrap stash.

Quilt as desired! For a Halloween vibe, consider spiderweb quilting motifs or spooky straight-line quilting in contrasting thread colors like neon green or bright orange. This sample was done with diagonal straight line machine quilting on my home sewing machine. After quilting, trim the excess batting and backing, then attach your binding using your favorite method. I used 1.5″ single fold binding.
