Chunky Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern (Bobble Blanket)

Chunky baby blanket crochet pattern. Blanket made chunky by using two strands of worsted weight yarn. Free pattern and instructions for this beginner-friendly pattern. 

Here’s a chunky blanket for a baby blanket with free pattern. You will need 2 skeins of yarn, crochet hook, yarn needle and scissors. This free crochet pattern uses basic crochet stitches for any skill level. Makes the perfect gift for a baby shower, baby birthday or a just because gift for a special baby in your extended family. 

Yarn

There are several ways to get a chunky blanket. You can use bulky weight yarn (weight 5) or a super chunky yarn / super bulky yarn (weight 6) to create a baby blanket. But another way is to take two skeins of worsted weight yarn (weight 3 or 4) and combine them together to make it chunky. This is a great project because you don’t have to do a color change with your yarns. And no color changes means less acrylic yarn tails to weave into the main blanket. Using two strands together along with rows of large bobbles gives a beautifully textured baby blanket.

Chunky Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern – Instructions

We are using two colors and crocheting them as one. Use Size M or 9 mm crochet hook for this chunky crochet baby blanket pattern. To make this baby blanket you will need to know how to single crochet, double crochet, extended single crochet and slip stitch. Beginner friendly and super easy. This baby blanket crochet pattern is in US terminology, not UK. 

Pattern Abbreviations (US):

sc = single crochet (Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook)

esc = extended single crochet (Start like a normal single crochet but pull through only one loop on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook)

dc = double crochet stitches (yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over again, pull through both loops on the hook)

bs = bobble stitch (single crochet in first stitch. Insert hook into stitch and pull yarn through 3 times then single crochet into the next stitch to form bobble)

Note: Every row that starts with sc is a bobble stitch row

Weave Tails

You shouldn’t have to weave any tails but if you ran out of yarn and had to add, then weave in tails before you do the chunky blanket border. If this is your first time weaving tails, here’s how to do it.

Make sure all tails are knotted once before you weave. Take yarn needle and weave tails into blanket. When you weave yarn into easy baby blanket, you want to run the yarn needle up a row and hide it in the blanket. Weave each tail separately. Make sure it looks like on the reverse side before cutting excess tail. Because we used two strands of worsted weight yarn in different colors, the tails should not show after you weave.  The tails will get lost in the blanket which is a good thing.

Washing Instructions

Machine wash cold on the gentle cycle by itself with a little soap. I just use regular laundry detergent but you could also opt for baby detergent that is allergy free, fragrance free too. Tumble dry on low cycle for about 15 or 20 minutes. Do not add bleach and do not iron. Blanket will be soft and fluffy, ready to snuggle up a baby or for baby to snuggle with it.
