How to Make a Crochet Baby Blanket
Making a crochet blanket is easier than most people think. Before you begin, follow these simple steps:
- Pick your pattern
- Choose your type of yarn
- Select the correct crochet hook
- Crochet your blanket
- Weave in ends
- Add a border
- Wash and enjoy your finished blanket
Choosing a Baby Blanket Pattern
This easy crochet baby blanket pattern uses single crochet stitches from beginning to end. Many crochet baby blanket patterns include half double crochet, shell stitch, or double crochet stitches, but for beginners I believe the best crochet stitch is the single crochet.
Because the stitch is simple, the color changes become the star of the project. The staggered rows create movement and texture without requiring advanced crochet techniques.
This is a great choice for anyone looking for an easy pattern that doesn’t require counting complicated stitches.
Crochet Baby Blanket Size
One of the best things about this simple pattern is that you can make it in different sizes.
Popular baby blanket size options include:
- Crib blanket: approximately 36″ x 52″
- Square blanket: approximately 36″ x 36″
- Stroller blanket: approximately 30″ x 36″
- Receiving blanket: approximately 30″ x 30″
You can easily adjust the starting chain to create the best size for your needs.
Best Yarn for Baby Blankets
The type of yarn you choose can make a big difference in the finished blanket.
For baby blanket patterns, I almost always recommend acrylic yarn. It is affordable, durable, machine washable, and available in hundreds of colors.
Best Yarns for Baby Blankets
- Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
- Bernat Blanket Yarn
- Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran
- Red Heart Super Saver
- Lion Brand Basic Stitch
While some crocheters prefer natural fibers, I find acrylic yarn works best for everyday baby blankets because it washes beautifully and holds up well over time.
Cotton Yarn vs Acrylic Yarn
Cotton yarn is wonderful for dishcloths, market bags, and summer projects. For a crochet baby blanket, I prefer acrylic yarn because it is softer, easier to care for, and more forgiving for busy parents.
What About Chunky Yarn?
Chunky yarn, bulky yarn, and bulky-weight yarn can all be used for baby blankets. They create a thicker blanket and work up much faster.
For this free crochet baby blanket pattern, I used worsted weight yarn because it creates a lightweight blanket that can be used year round.

Materials
Badlands – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
Olympic – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
Canyonlands – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
Rocky Mountain – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
Hot Springs – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
The exact amount of yarn will vary depending on your baby blanket size.

- ch = chain stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch

Turn.
Row 2
Chain 1.
Single crochet in the first stitch and each next stitch across.
Work the last stitch into the final stitch of the row.
Turn.

This easy stitch pattern consists entirely of single crochet stitches.
Color Changes
The secret to this gorgeous baby blanket is the random color placement.
Some colors may only be worked for part of a row while others may continue for several rows. The uneven color changes create the staggered look.
To change colors:
- Complete the final yarn over of the last stitch with the new color.
- Continue crocheting with the new yarn.
- Leave a tail for weaving in later.
- Use a yarn needle to weave in all ends when complete.
You can change colors at the end of row or in the middle of a row depending on the look you want.
For a cleaner appearance, avoid crocheting over your yarn tails. Weaving them in later produces a neater finished blanket.
Adding a Ruffled Border
The ruffled border gives this crochet blanket a soft and playful finish.
Round 1
Work around the side of the blanket.
- Single crochet
- Chain 1
- Single crochet in the next stitch
- Chain 1
Repeat around the entire blanket.
Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first stitch.
Round 2
Change colors.
Single crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip stitch.
Repeat with additional colors if desired.
You can also substitute a shell stitch border if you prefer a more traditional finish.
Do You Need a Gauge Swatch?
For most blanket projects, I do not make a gauge swatch.
A gauge swatch is important when making clothing, sweaters, cardigans, and fitted garments. Since a crochet blanket does not need to fit a specific size, most crocheters skip this step.

Helpful Crochet Tips
Buy Enough Yarn
Always purchase enough skeins of yarn before starting. Dye lots can vary, and it can be difficult to match colors later.
Check Your Hook Size
The yarn label will recommend a crochet hook size. Most worsted weight yarns use an H, I, or J hook.
Keep Your Tension Consistent
Try to keep your stitches the same size throughout the project. Consistent tension helps create a more professional looking blanket.
Washing Instructions
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
Tumble dry low.
Do not bleach.
Do not iron.
The finished blanket becomes soft and cozy after washing and is ready for snuggles.
