The beauty of using two colors in a crochet pattern is that it creates contrast and showcases your stitches even when you use basic crochet stitches. You can never go wrong with white and any color you like, white plays nicely with any color. Or you can try using the same color but in two contrasting shades. Here are some great color combo options below if you need some assistance.

Double Shell Stitch Border
We have all used the shell stitch for borders on all blanket sizes. You just place a certain number of double crochet stitches into the same chain to create a shell stitch. This shell stitch has 5 DCs but I’ve made shell borders with 4, 6, 7 or as many as you can fit into a single chain.
But the reason the shell stitch is truly popular for crochet borders is because you can create a ruffle with your shell stitches and have some control over how much they ruffle. Just pay attention to and play around with your stitch placements or how many spaces to leave in between your shells. The other is how full to make your shells. 5 double crochets in a single stitch is the typical amount to make but you can do 4 or more until you can no longer work into that one chain.

The double shell border is created by placing a double crochet into the back loop only of the existing shell double crochet stitches. And placing a slip stitch into the single crochet stitches separating the shells.
The type of yarn you use will also determine how your ruffles will come out. If you use super chunky yarn or bulky yarn, you will have less DC stitches in your shell. The reason why is because it’s hard to place double crochet stitch in the same chain with thick yarn and that big hook you need when using chunky yarn. I like to make my crochet items with worsted weight or 4 ply yarn. It make beautiful blankets that last a long time. They are soft yet durable, the perfect combination for any handmade crochet blanket.
Pom Pom Corners
Make 4 pom pom and attach by weaving the pom pom yarn tails. Slip the pom pom yarn tails into the blanket at the corners. You may insert into a shell stitch base, then tie a double knot and weave in the 4 yarn tails. Repeat for each corner. My pom pom was made with pink and white yarn.

Watch this video tutorial if you are unsure how to use the plastic pom pom makers. Clover Pom Pom Maker, check out this tutorial by Happy Berry Crochet.
You can buy this great 4 pack for just a few dollars. It’s not Clover brand but it’s pretty darn close and less expensive. I used the 48mm pom pom maker pictured below and it’s the perfect size for this baby blanket.

Wash It
Make sure you always wash your baby blanket before gifting. It will make the yarn soft and wonderful, plus it will clean it after all that crocheting. Machine wash cold on gentle cycle by itself with a little soap. I just use regular laundry detergent but you could also opt for baby detergent that is allergy free, fragrance free too. Tumble dry on low cycle for about 15 or 20 minutes for a cozy blanket. Do not add bleach and do not iron. Blanket will be soft and fluffy, ready to snuggle up a baby or for baby to snuggle with it.
Gift It
I hope you will enjoy making this sweet two color crochet pattern for the Modern Stripe Baby Blanket. Just follow the stitch tutorials and make sure you download the free printed pattern. It’s a great project for any skill level using single crochet stitches and double crochet stitches. Plus it’s a free crochet blanket pattern, you can never have enough free patterns. When you use two colors it’s very easy to change colors. You change on the last stitch, instead of pulling the current color through your hook you will grab the new color. You will need to tie these loose yarn threads into a single know and then weave tails into blanket using a yarn needle.
Add a special touch and get a label or order a label with your name on it and attach it some where near the border with sewing needle and thread. That way every time they use or see the blanket, they will see it was made with love by YOU.
