Looking for a quick, cozy project with a little flair? This V Stitch Double Crochet Scarf Pattern is just the thing! Whether you’re a beginner or need a fast gift idea, my new “Swiss Alps” crochet scarf pattern uses bold colors that pop with the classic V-stitch. Scarf measures 6.5″ x 49.5″, but you can easily customize the size to fit your style and taste.
Why You’ll Love This Scarf
The Swiss Alps pattern uses basic crochet stitches and any skill level can do this project! You can use any yarn type or colors you want, the number of skeins of yarn needed will vary. The type of yarn in my sample is acrylic yarn. But the real reason you will love this scarf is because it uses your favorite stitch, the double crochet stitch. Not to mention the v stitch pattern comes to life when you change colors on each row. You just need to switch yarn at the end of each row on the last stitch.

V-Stitch Double Crochet Scarf Pattern – Instructions
Foundation Row: To begin, we will chain in multiples of 2. For the foundation chain, chain 36 single crochet stitches, chain 2 and turn. This last chain 2 counts as the first double crochet in the next row. Turn your work.
Row 1: Skip 3 chains and in the 4th chain, crochet 2 double crochets in the same stitch. Skip the next stitch. In the following stitch, crochet 2 double crochet stitches. Continue skipping one chain, then two double crochets in the next chain all the way across until you reach the end of the row. Once you reach the end of the row, skip one chain, then in the last chain crochet one double crochet. Change yarn on last stich if you want. Chain 2, turn. This chain 2 counts as your first double crochet.
Row 2: Crochet 2 double crochet stitches in between the set of two double crochets from the previous row. Continue crocheting two double crochets in between each set of double crochet stitches from the previous row until you reach the end of the row. Once you reach the end of the row, crochet one double crochet into the top of the chain two. Change yarn color on the last stitch if desired. Chain 2 and turn.
Continue repeating Row 2 until your scarf reaches your desired length. For my scarf, I worked 99 rows total. Cut yarn and leave a long tail for weaving ends.
Finishing Touches
To finish, you can either:
Weave in Ends: Use a tapestry needle to tuck in all your tails securely. If you are doing this option, leave a long tail of yarn so it’s easy to weave into the scarf.
Double Knot and Snip: If you prefer, tie your tails in a double knot and snip the excess for a sturdy finish. Then add a border around the scarf to cover up those knots. See below.
Adding the Slip Stitch Border
Once you’ve finished the main body of the scarf, it’s time to clean up the edges with a simple slip stitch border.
- Join yarn at one corner with a slip stitch.
- Slip stitch evenly along the edges of the scarf, working 1 slip stitch in each stitch and space.
- At each corner, work 3 slip stitches to keep the edges neat.
- Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

More Yarn & Color Options
Choosing the right yarn and colors can transform your scarf into a unique piece. Here are some ideas to inspire you:
- Classic Look: Use a solid color for a clean, minimalist vibe. Try Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice for a soft, durable option available in stunning shades.
- Gradient Beauty: Use a self-striping yarn like Caron Cakes or Lion Brand Mandala for effortless color changes that create a gorgeous ombre effect.
- Chunky and Cozy: For a thicker, warmer scarf, use bulky yarn like Bernat Blanket or Loops & Threads Charisma. Pair with a larger hook for a fast finish.
- Bold Stripes: Combine 2-4 complementary colors, such as a neutral base with pops of jewel tones. Try Red Heart Soft for a smooth texture and vibrant palette.
- Scrappy Fun: Use leftover yarns from your stash for an eclectic, scrappy scarf that’s eco-friendly and full of personality! That’s me, scrappy and colorful.
How to wear it
I will say that because this scarf was made with 4 ply worsted weight acrylic yarn, it’s very stiff. I am kind of afraid to wash it because I don’t want the yarn to pill. But if you use Red Heart Super Saver yarn, you know that you have to wash it so the yarn gets soft. Washing and drying it on med heat with a fabric softener sheet makes blankets really soft. My wish is that it does the same for scarfs. The plan is to hand wash and then following the drying steps.
This scarf is perfect for folding in half and wearing under a blazer or jacket. It provides warmth when you are outdoor because it’s wrapped around your neck, this always helps to warm me up. It’s not a bulky scarf but again, that’s based on the yarn type and weight that you use. Helpful tip for all beginners, even an experienced crocheter sometimes forgets these things.
