How to Make the Granny Square
If you’ve never made one before, check out my How to Make a Granny Square Tutorial for detailed instructions. For this crochet wallet pattern, we’re making one granny square with 6 rounds.

Stitch Abbreviations
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
sp – space
Basic Granny Square Pattern (6 Rounds)
US crochet terms
Round 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc into ring, ch 2, 3 dc into ring, ch 2 repeat 2 more times. Join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (4 clusters)
Round 2: Cast on anywhere and ch 3 (counts as dc), ch 2, 3 dc in same chain space to create a corner. Repeat the 3 DC, chain 2 pattern 3 more times, and then join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning ch 3.
Round 3–6: Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner space and no extra sts in between clusters along the sides. Increase side clusters each round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
TIP Before You Add Lining
Before moving onto the lining and assembly, fold up three corners of your granny square (details below) and check that your debit card or credit cards fit inside. If not, you can add one more round to your granny square before continuing.

Preparing the Fabric Lining
This step makes your wallet practical so nothing falls out when closed. Granny squares have lots of holes, you don’t want coins or anything slipping out through the crochet holes.

- Cut your fabric: Two pieces, each 1/2″ smaller than your granny square.
- Place right sides together and sew all the way around with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a small opening for turning.
- Turn right side out and press flat.
- Top stitch all the way around close to the edge, sewing over the opening.

Sewing the Lining to the Granny Square

- Center the fabric lining on the wrong side of your granny square.
- Using your sewing machine with a stitch length of 3.5 and white thread, sew all the way around the edge of the lining to secure it.
- The stitches will be barely noticeable on the outside of your crochet wallet once finished.
- No sewing machine? You can also hand stitch the lining in place.

Folding the Wallet
Lay your granny square flat with the right side down. Fold three corners toward the center to form the body of the wallet, leaving the fourth corner free as the flap. Insert a debit card and make sure it fits. Use a sewing clip to hold in place.

Turn the wallet inside out and then join the corners. When done, you will turn right side out. Note: there are lots of ways to do this step. I’m doing single crochet stitches with a crochet hook because it’s the fastest for me.

Using single crochet stitches through both loops of each chain on both layers, join along the two folded edges to secure.
Fold two corners together, then sew the third corner with the two already sewn. You will have one corner left for the flap.

Adding the Button
- Place your button on the bottom half of the front of the wallet (the body section, not the flap).
- Use a sewing needle and thread to attach. Insert needle through the holes in the middle of the button and through the wallet. Do this a couple times to secure. Tie and knot and cut off excess thread.
- Paige Handmade has a great video tutorial if you need more help with hand sewing button.

Making the Crochet Loop Closure
This step keeps your wallet closed and adds a handmade touch.
- With your final granny square corner, make a simple chain to close the wallet and slip over the button. Cast on with your yarn to the corner chain on the last granny square corner.
- Chain 8 single crochet stitches then connect to the granny square.
- Just single crochet into the other side of the same granny square corner to finish the loop.
- Test the loop over your button for fit, adjust if needed, and fasten off.
- Weave in the yarn tails. You’re all done!
