Easy crochet pillow free pattern. Looking for a fast and easy crochet pillow pattern for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July? Well look no further, do I have a great pattern for you!
Creating free pillow patterns is so much fun and here’s one that has a great texture but on a smaller scale. This Americana pillow is made using the Even Berry Stitch, 1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver Americana Yarn and a pillow form.
Today I’m going to walk you through the steps of how to make a simple rectangle crochet pillow. I made this pillow last winter, just playing with simple stitches that could be cute in a throw pillow.
Texture is also a key factor for me when designing a pillow pattern. Always looking for a crochet stitch that has some texture and won’t eat up a lot of yarn. The Even Berry stitch provides a great texture and makes the pillow more interesting.
My last pillow pattern, Modern Square Pillow, used chunky yarn, but this pillow pattern uses a worsted weight 4 ply yarn. There are only 44 rows in this entire pillow, that’s it. But this Red Heart Americana Yarn is on the thinner side and works up a little slower than the super bulky yarn. Even with a thinker yarn, this simple crochet pillow cover pattern can still be completed in a day. Not too late to make this cute pillow for Fourth of July!
A great way to change your home décor is to switch out your pillows. And the best part about a simple crochet pillow pattern is that you can customize the pillow look and feel based on the different colors of yarn you select. See below for materials needed.

Americana Crochet Pillow Free Pattern – Materials Needed
The materials are very common and you should be able to go to your local craft store or shop online to purchase. All skill levels can complete this crochet project.
- Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (Americana) – 1 skein
- Size I (5.5mm) Crochet Hook
- Yarn needle
- 12″ x 18″ Throw Pillow Insert
Pillow Form
Weather you call the inside of a crochet cushion a pillow form or pillow insert, it really doesn’t matter. It’s all the same thing. It’s the stuffing for your pillow. Here are three options for your pillow form.
1. Buy a pillow form at the craft store. Craft stores sell pillow inserts in different shapes and sizes.
2. Make a pillow form with fabric and pillow stuffing. If you have a sewing machine and pillow stuffing you can make your own. Cut two pieces of fabric in the shape of your pillow. Sew three sides with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn the fabric inside out. Stuff pillow with pillow stuffing from fabric store or from old pillows. Use sewing pins to to hold last side of pillow down and keep stuffing in. Take to the sewing machine and sew the last side of the pillow.
3. Recycle a pillow. Reuse an existing pillow that you have and cover it or go thrifting at your local thrift store.
Benefits of Making Your Own Pillow Form
If you own a sewing machine and know how to sew, making your own pillow form is an easy way to create any size pillow yourself. My tip is to watch for sales and use store coupons for the pillow stuffing as it can get expensive making your own insert.
There are different types of pillow stuffing: firm packing fiber, garneted fiber, silky fiber, premium classic fiber, cluster fiber and stuffing beads. You can create a firm pillow or a down pillow, just check out the stuffing at your local craft store to check each stuffing type.
You will need a good amount of stuffing to fill in your pillow form. Poly-Fill Premium Polyester Fiber Fill 32oz bag is an excellent choice and the stuffing I generally use. Joann is my go to craft store, if you have one close to your home then check out the batting and stuffing area for a wide selection.

Americana Crochet Pillow Free Pattern – Stitch Instructions
To make this crochet pillow cover, you will be making two separate pieces and then connecting them together with the pillow insert stuffed in the middle. Again, this pattern uses only two stitches. For the two pillow pieces, the only stitch you will use for every stitch in every row is the Even Berry Stitch. That’s why it’s the perfect pattern to make your own pillows. You don’t need mad crochet skills to complete. Let me tell you how to do The Berry Stitch.
The Berry Stitch
There are two ways to do the berry stitch: Even Berry Stitch or Uneven Berry Stitch. The berry stitch is done the same way in each, the difference is the placement of the berry in the rows.
The Even Berry Stitch has berry’s that are stacked on top of each other from row to row for a uniform look.
The Uneven Berry Stitch has alternating berry’s from row to row and are not stacked uniformly on top of each other.
This stitch requires an even number of chains not including your turning chain.
Basic Berry Stitch instructions: Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through one loop on the hook, yarn over, insert hook into same space, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all five loops left on the hook.

We will make two crochet pillow covers, a front panel and a back panel, then connect the tow panels together with a pillow form in the middle. Pattern is in US terminology, not UK.

Beginner, all skill levels.

You want the first two rows to be 17″, a little less width than your pillow form, that’s your gauge. This yarn weight does not have a lot of stretch so you can fit check on your foundation chain.
American Patriotic Crochet Pillow – Free Pattern
For this pattern you will crochet one front and one back pillow cover for a total of two pieces. Once both pieces are done, you will crochet on the outside of the pillow cover to attach. Let’s get started with front pillow cover first.
Front Pillow Cover Pattern:
Make a slip knot, insert hook and chain 54, ch 1, turn.
Rows 1: Starting in the first st from hook, sc in all sts, ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 – 22: Sc in the first st from hook, then a berry stitch in the following st. (Berry stitch: yo, insert hook, yo, pull up a loop, yo pull through one loop on the hook, yo, insert hook into same space, yo pull up a loop, yo, pull through all five loops left on the hook.) Repeat until end of row. Ch 1, turn. Tie off on the last chain in the final row. Weave tail end.
Back Pillow Cover Pattern:
Joining Front and Back Covers:
This stitch DOES have a wrong side and right side. The right side has the berries facing outward, the wrong side does not have berries at all.
Next, lay the front pillow cover on top of the back pillow cover with right sides facing outwards. Use a single crochet stitch on the outside of the pillow covers to join three sides. Make sure you add three single crochets into all the corners to round out the border evenly. Once you have three sides joined, take the pillow insert and stuff it into the pillow cover. This easy crochet pillow pattern joins all sides of the crochet pillow so it does not have a removable cover.
Make sure you get the corners of the insert stuffed all the way into the cover corners. Final step is to join the last side of the pillow cover to complete. Last step is to take the yarn needle and weave the tails into the pillow cover. Fluff out the pillow and enjoy!
