Design Your Own Blocks
Have you ever looked at a photo of a quilt block or full sized quilt and tried to figure out how it was constructed? Well I do this all the time and I’ve also used quilt design cards too. But the trick with any patchwork block is to try to make it as simplified as possible. Why you ask? To reduce the amount of time it takes to make each block but to reduce the amount of seams. Machine quilting is much easier if you have less seams to quilt over.
Quilt math may sound like a bad word but in reality it’s not. I lay out my blocks on my large cutting mat and use the measurement lines to help me get the block the size I want it to be. The rest is trial and error. Pro tip: when using quilt math, don’t forget to add 1/4 inch everywhere you need to connect the fabric to the block.
That little number can throw off the size of the finished block. I swear, creating or recreating quilt blocks and patterns will make you a better quilter. You will use your little grey cells, my Agatha Christie friends will know this reference!

Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions
Make the Ornament Cap:
Sew the 2 – 1.25″ x 4.25″ background pieces to both sides of the 1.25″ x 2″ black piece. Press with iron towards the dark fabric.
Assemble the Ornament Body:
Cut the 5″ square in half to form 2 – 2.5″ x 5″ rectangles. Insert the contrast fabric rectangle in the middle of the main fabric rectangles and sew together using 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all 4 – 1.5″ x 1.5″ background squares or snowball squares.
Place one square on the top left corner of the ornament, right sides together. Sew on the horizontal line. Using a straight quilting ruler and rotary cutter, trim 1/4 inch away from the seam and press with hot iron.
Repeat with the second square on the top right corner of the rectangle.
Then repeat with the third and fourth squares on the bottom left and right corner of the ornament.
Attach the ornament sides, 2 – 2.75″ x 5.75″ background rectangles to the left and right sides of the ornament.
Join the Pieces:
Sew the ornament cap unit to the top of the ornament body unit. Press with hot iron when done.
Add Top and Bottom Border:
Sew the 2 – 2.5″ x 9.5″ background strips to the top and bottom of the quilt block. This will make the block an untrimmed finished measure of 9.5″ x 10.5″, the same size as the other blocks in this year’s Christmas quilt blocks.
Trim and Square Up:
Trim the block to 9.5″ x 10.5″ to ensure clean edges and even dimensions.
