It’s so much fun to make and you don’t need year of quilting experience to make this. It’s beginner friendly and full of festive cheer.
The color scheme is totally up to you, have fun and play with fabrics. For a colorful touch, make the background fabric for each colored block from one of your favorite Christmas fabrics. It’s the perfect size, works on a long coffee table or your Christmas dinner table.
Give it a scrappy feel by using different prints for the background fabric. It doesn’t have to be Christmas fabric. Choice colors that work with your color scheme or palette. This cheerful table runner is very versatile and looks good with white fabrics for the background or colored fabrics. There are no half square triangles in this quilt block either. How to Make the Christmas Tree Table Runner
Piece the Christmas Tree Blocks
Follow the Christmas Tree Quilt Block pattern and free tutorial included in the PDF to make five blocks. Two blocks with the light background and three blocks with the dark background. The combination of squares and strips with flippy corners creates charming, easy-to-assemble trees.
Assemble the Runner
Arrange your five blocks in a row, adding sashing strips between each block and along the top and bottom. Start the row with the dark background block, then the light background block facing the opposite direction, and repeat.
When sitting at your holiday dining table, each side of the table will have tree blocks facing them. One side will have the light background blocks facing them. The other side of the table will have the dark blocks facing them. I think that’s nice but you can arrange however you like. Attach the border to frame your blocks.
Layer and Quilt
Layer your backing fabric (solid side), batting, and quilt top. Take some yardage fabric and unfold it. The table runner will just fit the standard width fabric with about an inch extra on all sides for quilting. This is fine, it worked our perfectly. This table runner did not shift at all when machine quilting. I used 505 Spray Basting spray for this.
Use a simple quilted design or free motion quilting design in festive stars or snowflakes. I’m keeping this simple and modern so not a lot of quilting. Just followed the seam lines in one direction, only sewing along one side of the seam and not on both side. But have fun and choose your favorite machine quilting design for your table runner.
Trim Quilt Sandwich
Trim the quilted table runner with your rotary cutter and cutting mat. Use a long straight line quilting ruler and just trim right along the edge of the blocks so no batting is visible. I did not square up the corners and it still came out straight and even when folded in half.
The key is to not have batting visible for when you attach your binding. If you leave a little batting visible, you run the risk of your batting showing after you have sewn the binding on the first side of your quilt project. We don’t want that.
Bind and Finish
Use the single fold binding method to secure the edges, and your reversible table runner is complete! I used 2″ strips for the binding because that’s the side I used for the sashing. I started attaching the binding to the back of the quilt.
Pressed open with iron, flipped the quilt over and folded binding in half and then iron/pinned in place. This wider border allowed me to omit sewing a border around the quilt before binding. Again, keeping it more modern and simple. I prefer to sew binding on quilts and have the stitch show on the back of the quilt.
